Modern and Chic Singing BowlsModern and Chic Singing BowlsThis Modern and Chic Singing Bowls are modern bowls made out of heavy bell metal, with beautiful designs etched on both the inside and outside surfaces. Not only are they visually appealing, but they are easy to play and have a very clear tone. Each bowl comes with its own rubber o-ring and playing wand. It is a heritage of Tibetan Singing Bowls.
The sound of singing bowls is so magic. Everything that moves vibrates, from the smallest molecule to the universe itself. As long as it is vibrating, it is making some kind of sound. We may not perceive the sound, as it may be below or above the threshold of our hearing. The human ear can hear sound vibrations between 20 and 20,000 cycles per second, although we also perceive sound by skin and bone conduction, ingesting and consuming it with the whole body.
Many cultures and religions revere sound so deeply as to believe it called the universe into being. So Tibetan Singing Bowls are.

We met Suren Shrestha in November, 2007. Suren is from a family of makers of traditional 7 metal singing bowl  from Nepal. The bowls offered above on this page are all from Suren’s family!

Light and Crystal Singing BowlSuren now travels the world using singing bowls during healing workshops and consultations. In November, Suren played a “F” bowl as a part of a healing demonstration. Jill was so moved, she asked if she could buy  more F bowls. Since buying the first, more F bowls have arrived one at a time.  They are a phenomenal experience to hear.  The bowls gently struck with the soft part of the striker, then moved up and down one’s body. A real connection with Truth and Healing.  We know that most of what we buy has come to us as a portal to be moved on to someone else.

New Singing BowlsTibetan Singing Bowls can be devided into antique singing bowls and New Singing Bowls in generally speaking. Many of the antique bowls were probably made for use as storage or food vessels, and their sound properties were incidental. New Singing Bowls are still being made for these uses, but also many are now made specially to be used for their sound qualities.

Although it is sometimes said that the knowledge of the traditional methods of producing the bowls has been lost, there are still some made in the traditional way, particularly in Nepal. However, gold and silver are no longer used in their construction, and neither is meteoritic iron. The modern Tibetan Singing Bowls do not have the tonal quality of the antiques ones, but they may do after a century or two.

Singing Bowls
Singing Bowls

Most of people know that Singing Bowls are usually associated with Tibet but their exact origin is uncertain. They have a long tradition in numerous countries including Nepal, Mongolia and China. The bowls are said to have been brought to Tibet along with Buddhism around the 8th century CE. It would probably be more accurate to describe them as Himalayan singing bowls however the term Tibetan appears to have stuck.

Today you can buy a variety of Tibetan Singing Bowls ranging from genuine antiques through modern versions made in the region to Western copies. Some people argue that any bowl less than about 100 years old cannot really be classed as “authentic”, however genuine antiques are becoming increasingly difficult to find so buying the modern version is the only option for many people.

Many modern bowls for sale today are honest about their origins, others have been known to attempt to pass themselves off as “vintage” – if in doubt it’s best to ask an expert before you buy. And our blog will continue to write about the singing bowls, you can also focus on our blog or communicate with other fans of the Tibetan Singing Bowls.
